Looking for Light

I stand next to the open slider,
letting in fresh air,
as the snow falls
into a month of long winter.

I’ve plugged in the string lights,
draped above the glass,
for a little extra glow
amidst today’s gray.
A few of the lights are reflected
in the black coffee in my mug,
and moving with the subtle motions
of the hand,
they jump and dance,
like the squiggle of sparklers
on a deep July night.

I’m entrusting
my worries about the world
to Spirit this morning,
as they feel big,
and Spirit has
bigger hands.

I finish the coffee,
and in the glaze,
at the bottom of the empty cup,
the lights are steady,
like stars in a night sky.
